Buyer & seller guide

A better-prepared private sale

The best conversations start with clear information. Use these checkpoints to prepare your listing, compare vehicles, and approach the purchase with confidence.

Before you buy

Compare similar vehicles, set a budget that includes registration and maintenance, and ask the owner about service history, modifications, and known issues. A low price alone is not a reason to rush.

Inspections and test drives

Arrange an independent inspection with a qualified specialist, especially for a classic or modified vehicle. Agree on a test-drive plan and confirm insurance arrangements before driving.

Preparing your vehicle to sell

Take clear photos of the exterior, interior, and any imperfections. Gather service records and describe the vehicle honestly, including damage, repairs, and known mechanical concerns.

Pricing your listing

Compare vehicles with similar year, mileage, condition, and specification. Explain what supports your asking price, and be clear about whether you are open to offers.

Paperwork and title

Check your state’s official requirements for title transfer, registration, and a bill of sale. If a loan remains on the vehicle, discuss the lien release process with the lender before agreeing on payment.

Completing the sale

Confirm the vehicle, ownership documents, and agreed terms before exchanging funds. Coordinate payment and title transfer together, and keep copies of the completed paperwork.

Requirements vary by location. Find official vehicle research and title resources.
